Google Ate Blogger

Apparently I need a Google account to continue using blogger. Not too sure what all is involved in this. I don't really like Google, and stopped using them a few years ago because of their involvement in writing the censorship and spy software to police the Chinese internet. Whatever happened to "don't be evil"? That pissed me off, so I'll have to figure out what to do now.

Thanks for your comment on AeroGo, I left a reply there.

I don't mind Google too much for now, but I wonder what people are going to do if Google's got 20 years of their search history and email all archived, and who knows what else?

People forget that the search you get on Google is only what can be done in real time. Who knows what capability they truly have when you have plenty of time to combine the web crawler, Google cache, GMail, Google Maps, click-through history, and other stuff?

I have mixed feelings about the Chinese censorship. I get news from groups such as Open Doors so I'm well aware of the human rights violations, but at the same time I think companies aren't the best ways to deal with that; they must generally be expected to obey the laws of the countries they operate in, within that country.

Of course, if it gets too bad, then they should get out. Overall, I think Microsoft and Google's sites being in China aid freedom more than the required censorship impedes it, so I think they've made an acceptable compromise.

On the other hand, U.S. companies who work to build the Orwellian control structures their government wants deserve criticism. I didn't know Google was working on that, though I have read of some other U.S. companies being involved in that. There needs to be some group such as EFF that works to expose this, so that the better companies get out of this line of work, and leave it to the incompetents.
